"All it takes is one person… and another… and another… and another… to start a movement."
- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
The Social Action Committee invites you to join us in engaging in the mitzvot of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Alexandra Weil and Claudia Diamond are honored to lead this committee on behalf of such a vibrant, diverse, and talented community,
Based on members' interests and passion, we have increased opportunities for direct action, focused primarily on local Baltimore issues such as educating our youth, homelessness/hunger/poverty, and green initiatives. The Committee would like to make our umbrella bigger by addressing global issues and expanding our local interests and involvement.
Below is a list of most of the up-and-running projects. Please join us in some or all of these endeavors; in addition, please let us know of your own passions and interests All it takes is one person . . . and another. . . . .
* The BSS Mentoring Program at City Springs Elementary/Middle School located near Little Italy. Members mentor public school students from ages 10-12 once or more a month. City Springs is a public pre-K through 8 school and is one of five schools operated by the Baltimore Curriculum Project.
* The BSS Casserole Program—Started in 2009 with an initial delivery of 20 frozen homemade casseroles, members at the synagogue and our neighbors in the adjacent Roland Park neighborhood prepare homemade casseroles, which are then delivered to Our Daily Bread in Baltimore the 4th Sunday of every month. Anyone can be part of this once-a-month program that takes minimal effort but provides major impact in feeding the hungry in our city. Recipes can be found here.
* BSS volunteers at Barclay School, a K-8 school, located in the Greenmount neighborhood in Baltimore. A number of Bolton Street members are involved in this school. They mentor, do supply drives, read books to the children, etc. In addition, the synagogue hosts a family fun night held in the spring at the school.
* Tikkun Olam for our Children and Youth –Throughout the school year, children participating in religious school and other activities have opportunities to do social action, including a holiday project in December and teen volunteer opportunities.
